Insidious: The Last Key

I'm going to start by saying I'm a huge fan of the Insidious movies. The first two, especially the first one were disturbing and terrifying at the same time. However, since then the last two efforts, which includes the latest one, have gone downhill a bit.

The problem is that the last two films have been prequels, which due to the events of the first two films they had to be. However the problem is that means you are at a place before the brilliant Lin Shayes character meets the other main characters from the first two movies. It's just her.

It was having the whole cast of the first two movies that in my eyes really made the series especially Patrick Wilson, who also stars as a paranormal investigator in the Conjuring series.

All that being said Lin Shaye plays her part brilliantly. She has always had the character of Elise Rainier down to a t. The movie also has some very scary moments, and some very jumpy screams but, it lacks the absolute terror of the first two films. However I was still very nervous watching it as I am with all horror movies and this one has a big twist. Let's just say there are horrors in this world as well as the next.

In conclusion I really enjoyed this movie, which judging by the ending I think will be the last one in the series but that remains to be seen. As a stand alone horror movie it's very good, but, as it's part of a series you have to compare it to the other Insidious movies. I couldn't decide between 3 and 4 stars so I'm going to sit nicely on the fence and it give it what I feel is a very fair 3 and a half stars. Horror fans you may well enjoy this but don't have any expectations of comparing it to the first two movies. 3 and a half stars fairly awarded.
