Darkest Hour
I will start by saying that Darkest Hour isn't the sort of film I usually see but there wasn't much on I either hadn't seen or wanted to see so I thought 'why not?'. I'm so glad I did though.
I didn't realise that this movie is basically a companion movie for the epic movie Dunkirk. The difference being that rather than based on the beaches like Dunkirk it's set behind the scenes so to speak, in the halls of parliament where decisions are made.
Directed by the director of Locke, that brilliant movie starring Tom Hardy, it follows Gary Oldmans epic portraal of the wartime leader as he has to make a decision on Dunkirk and also a decision on whether or not to negotiate with Hitler and the Nazis.
This isn't a five star movie but is easily a four star one and the reason it is one is because of the incredible acting skills of Oldman. From start to finish you are totally convinced by his portrayal of Churchill from his mannerisms to his way of speaking, to his actions and more he gets it right.
His performance is truly engaging to the extent that the movie suffers when he is not in a particular scene. There are some slow scenes and don't expect your typical wartime action movie. For that watch Dunkirk.
But you will get an amazing behind the scenes in Parliament portrayal of the wartime leader Churchill that is truly interesting to watch and, for younger viewers a great history lesson.
For those reasons I give this movie a well deserved 4 stars. If you've seen Dunkirk see this. 4 stars awarded.
