Winchester
I've always loved a good horror movie, and I've always loved haunted houses, not that I would ever want to live in one! This movie combines both and on top of that it's inspired by actual events. I do wonder why a film about a haunted house in California was filmed in Queensland Australia but we'll gloss over that one! I've just always believed a movie should be filmed in the area where they are based on, but there you go.
Anyway, forgetting that minor issue, Winchester is a brilliant movie. Directed by two brothers, it's not absolutely terrifying, but it is very scary and, unlike a lot of horror movies, it actually has a storyline!
Firstly it stars the excellent Helen Mirren, who has been in so many films and tv series and needs no introduction. Then on top of that you have Jason Clarke, who excels as the sceptic doctor come to investigate Helen Mirrens' characters mental health.
I think what makes this movie so good is that it's based on something that actually exists. Apparently the house that it's based on, the Winchester house, is one of the most haunted in America today. (Yes I did get that from the movie!)
The other reason I like this movie so much is it's not only scary, it's a lesson against holding guns because the spirits that were killed by the Winchester weapon come back to haunt the house and the owner of the company that built them.
This is such a good lesson against guns. Imagine if every person that was killed by a gun came back to haunt the gun maker and the person that killed them. It would massively reduce gun crime!
On top of all that the actual film as I said is scary and there are a lot of scenes that have what I call 'unforseen' scares. Things you didn't expect to happen in the film that make you jump. And I think that is one of the scariest ways of doing a horror movie.
I can't tell you much more without giving the game away so I'll just say the critics have it wrong, this is a scary movie and a lesson in gun control all rolled into one. It won't win any Oscars but it truly is a great film. Four stars awarded.
