Unsane
I've watched many horror films. I'm a big fan of the genre and it always annoys me that horror films rarely win Oscars. Why? What is it the people that give out these awards have got against horror movies?
However, it's very, very rare that I leave a horror movie or in this case a horror/thriller movie and my hearts still thumping and I'm still shaking a bit. As I write this I'm trying to calm myself down. Just disturbing in every way.
This movie is well directed and also stars one of the actors from the tv series the Looming Tower, and I will never look at him the same way in that show after seeing him in this movie.
But the recognition goes to the lead actress, Claire Foy. Imagine being tricked into committing yourself into a mental institution just to fulfil that institutions insurance quota. Imagine on admission you discover a stalker that has been following you and harassing you for years, a stalker that you took a restraining order against is working there under a false name.
Now, imagine all that and imagine no one believes you about the stalker or the fact that you aren't insane. This movie looks at two very very difficult topics, one is being stalked and the other is how society label people in mental institutions.
So much happens and it's so disturbing, big chunks of the movie are hard to watch. But, I have to say this movie is so powerful it's one of the best horror movies I've ever seen. I'm still thinking about it now.
In conclusion it doesn't make my top ten of all time but it's not far off, disturbing, upsetting, hard to watch and truly, truly brilliant. Oh, and watch for the cameo by Matt Damon. Brilliant movie, a must see for all horror and horror/thriller Movie fans. Five stars awarded.
