Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
***warning, may contain spoilers***
I was so looking forward to this movie. I absolutely love the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World series I really do. Nearly all the previous movies (especially the first Jurassic World) have been epic.
So, I was so looking forward to seeing this film but also nervous. Why was I nervous? Because people have told me that they were dissapointed by it, although in fairness others have liked it.
So, what did I think? It was a good movie. There were lots of scary Dinosaur scenes, plus this movie introduced a new very violent hybrid breed of Dinosaur into the mix. All that was excellent. There were heartfelt scenes too, where they battled to save Blue, that really tugged on the heart strings. All in all it was a good movie to watch.
The problem is though that I was expecting epic not just good. When I go to see a Jurassic Park or Jurassic World movie i expect to be terrified by the Dinosaurs and also excited by the action. The action also needs to be on a grand scale and rarely stop.
They made a fatal flaw in this film. The first Jurassic World movie was filmed over wide open spaces on the island, with lots of room to run about and that makes a difference. In fact, it is the difference. When you have a huge park to run around in it's exciting, it adds to the action.
For this movie, apart from the first maybe 25 minutes, they decided to use small closed spaces, firstly a ship, then a mansion. The trouble is when you do that, when you limit the areas to run around in you limit the excitement. You need wide open spaces to make the action and the movie work, not tight closed in spaces which would be great in a horror movie, but terrible in an action/special effects movie such as this.
My other criticism is the fact that it seemed like the whole movie was really just a two hour set up for the next one in the series. It was simply a vehicle to get the Dinosaurs from the island to mainland USA to cause havoc in a future film. Now, I'm confident that future movie will be epic. Dinosaurs in our world attacking cities etc that is pure class. But, that could have been this movie.
You could have dealt with everything that happened in this film in about 35 minutes then spent the rest of the time with the Dinosaurs let loose in our world attacking cities etc! You don't need to spend 2 whole hours to get the Dinosaurs from one place to another. Well, you do if you want to make money off a follow up film but also piss the audience off in the meantime! I can only assume the reason the story of getting the Dinosaurs from the island to the USA lasted 2 hours was purely for profit reasons, and that is what is dissapointing.
However, based on the fact the Dinosaurs are now over here I cannot wait for the next film in the series, which hopefully won't take as long to arrive as this one. Although, in fairness the main star of the movie, the excellent Chris Pratt, is in so high demand that it might be a wait for the next one!
You can see why he is in high demand too. Guardians of the galaxy is a very good reason, along with many other top films. He does a great job in this movie too. It is not his fault that the storyline wasn't good.
When I saw the director, I thought 'what a shame Spielberg isn't directing it.' But then during the ending credits I saw he was an Executive producer so surely the great man would have had an influence over this to say 'look, we need to get the Dinosaurs over to the USA quickly, let's show the audience some epic dinosaur attacks humans scenes'. But maybe even he was thinking about the money he could make saving all that for the sure to come follow up movie. It's all about the money to them I guess isn't it? Shame.
The movie itself is well directed for the script it has and the Dinosaur action scenes are as usual awesome. When the Dinosaur chased the little girl I was biting my nails hoping she would escape. The special effects of the Dinosaurs and also the volcano erupting are awesome.
The sound is awesome too, gradually getting louder and then frantic when the Dinosaurs attack. It is a good action movie, but, as you can see by everything I've written it should have been epic not just good and that's where it let's itself down. This isn't a generic action flick, it's the Jurassic Park/world series for goodness sake. It's supposed to be epic. Jeff Goldblum should have been part of the action as well by the way, not just sitting in a courtroom. That was another major flaw in the movie.
Well acted, exciting in places and great action scenes, this is a good four star action movie. But, if they had only got the Dinosaurs over quicker and shown them attacking buildings and cities etc in this film rather than the next one it probably would have been an epic five star movie. Shame, what a waste. :/
A good four star action movie, worth a watch but could have been a lot better. Bring on the next movie in the series with the Dinosaurs let loose I say! Four stars awarded. :-)
