Ocean's 8
***Warning, contains spoilers***
I was really looking forward to seeing this movie. I LOVED Ocean's 11 and the follow ups were ok, but the original movie, the one set in Las Vegas, based around the Bellagio hotel was brilliant. Unfortunately after that the follow ups went downhill but they were still ok.
So, it was with great interest that I settled down to watch Ocean's 8, the latest instalment in the series.
The interesting thing about the latest movie is that, unlike the previous chapters the cast is all female instead of male. This follows a trend recently of remaking all male movies with an all female cast, such as the new Ghostbusters movie.
The biggest and early shock of this movie is that Danny Ocean (played by George Clooney), is dead. I really didn't expect that, I thought he would pop up at some point to surprise his sister, played by Sandra Bullock. When she says to his grave, 'I hope you're in there' you expect him to pop up at some point in the movie and yell 'surprise!' But alas, no he really is sadly dead, which is a shame as I think he would have made a huge difference to this movie, even with a cameo role.
So, what is the movie like? Well, truthfully, it's ok. Nothing special. It's just your average heist movie but with no real whistles and bells and not even any double crosses to make it more exciting. Normally the Ocean movies have lots of twists and turns but this had virtually none, it was dull.
The next point is, and with all due respect to the very lovely Rihanna as she is a great singer, but Rihanna can't act. She has hardly made any new songs lately because she clearly wants to try and be an actress and has appeared in a fair few films lately but her acting is nothing like her singing. It's wooden and not believable, sadly. She should go back to singing which she of course is brilliant at.
The movie does star one of my favourite actresses, Mindy Kaling who was brilliant in the office, and she does add something to the movie with her acting skills. Plus, Sandra Bullock plays a great leading lady role, she is very believable as a criminal, which I didn't expect especially as she normally plays the good girl in most of her films.
The directing is fine the actresses give their all and the music keeps it exciting especially during the actual heist scene, but, the problem is with the script. It's boring. Nothing much happens. In Ocean's 11 there are twists and turns and double crosses and fights etc etc, this didn't have any of that.
Don't get me wrong, it was watchable, the actual heist was a quite enjoyable caper, but even then there was a further bit of the movie after the heist that lasted a good 35/40 minutes and seemed a bit pointless. Once you've done the heist that should be it. A few shots of celebration then done, let's start planning the next one. But no, it went on and on. I think the reason for such a long bit after the heist was completed was purely to give James Corden a role. Yes, it's great seeing such a talented British man on screen, but he simply wasn't needed in this movie. Don't invent an extra story just to give someone a part!
In short, it was an ok heist movie but nothing more. See if you have nothing else to do but don't go out of your way to see it. A very average 3 stars awarded.
