Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again/Hotel Artemis (Double Review)
***Warning, contains spoilers***
So, today at my local cinema I saw two films, and here's my review of both of them. First, the Mamma Mia sequel. I'm going to start by saying that I am a MASSIVE fan of Abba's music, especially certain songs such as Waterloo and Dancing Queen. Epic songs.
I also loved the first Mamma Mia, where Amanda Seyfried, playing Sophie, set out to find out who her father was out of the three possibilities. I sang along and loved that movie, but, there was a lot of singing but very little storyline.
The sequel is completely different, and that is a very good thing. It makes it much, much better. Firstly, and some fans won't like this, there is less singing. But, that means there is storyline, which makes a huge difference. The film in detail explores Donna as a young adult and how she became pregnant and how she built the hotel from the first movie.
It also explores Sophie in more detail, as she finds out she is pregnant and how she refurbishes her mum's hotel to modern standards. It's just such a detailed story. I have to say that in this movie, it's the actress that plays young Donna that steals the show though. Step up Lily James. Literally a fantastic job portraying everything Donna went through, her entire back story.
As usual the music is amazing too. You will find yourself singing along to the hits, but don't worry, everyone in the cinema will be too.
Right, I have one complaint, and this is the only thing that stops this being in my top ten movies of all time and also really made me tearful, so I think what the director was trying to achieve worked. But, they killed off Donna, Meryl Streep's character! How could they do that? She played such a great role and to just hear at the start of the movie that she was dead and not how she died or anything was just a huge shock to the system. It was rescued slightly at the end, but I will let you watch it to find out why.
Also, there are so many more stars in this movie, such as Cher, Andy Garcia and even Dominic Cooper who plays Sophie's boyfriend. They all contribute to making this an excellent must watch incredible movie.
Very close to being in my top ten but this movie easily gets the five stars from me it richly deserved. Enjoy singing along, but bring some tissues! Five stars awarded. Must see!
Right, onto Hotel Artemis. I must say I couldn't wait to see this movie, it has three huge stars in it. Jodie Foster, who is epic in everything she does, Jeff Goldblum, who needs no introduction, and Dave Bautista, who we all know from Guardians of the galaxy. Oh, plus Charlie Day, who is as hilarious as ever, but in a very disturbing way this time, and the gorgeous Sofia Boutella and others too.
So, how did this movie shape up with its all star cast? Well, the director did a great job. There are lots of dramatic scenes and disturbing camera angles, with dramatic sound to go with it.
It was a good movie, exciting, dramatic and a disturbing vision of what the world could be like in ten years time. I really enjoyed this movie but I can only award it four stars not five. Why?
Well, the answer is it's an exact RIP off of the first John Wick movie. Jodie Foster' s character runs a hotel for criminals just like in John Wick, she tries to repair them just like in John Wick, oh and they have rules such as no firearms just like in John Wick. It's an absolute exact copy.
And that annoys me. It's fine to take ideas and bits from other films, but to just remake another movie and give it a different name, well, I'm amazed they can get away with it. If I was the makers of John Wick I would consider suing from breach of copyright and you know what, I think they could win too! Shocking.
However, the action is amazing, the acting is outstanding and it is a brilliant watch. It's 94 minutes run time flies by. A really good four star movie due to the copying I mentioned above.
Well worth seeing, a really good action movie with a great but copied storyline. Four stars awarded.
