Skyscraper
***Warning, contains spoilers***
I wonder about the critics, I really do. They raved about Hereditary which was rubbish, yet they don't like the movie I saw today, Skyscraper which was brilliant?! All I can think is that movie critics as a whole are not geared towards ordinary people but rather more wealthy people that prefer 'arty' films, I really don't know.
Anyway, onto Skyscraper. The Rock has made a name for himself as an actor recently. He was brilliant and hilarious in Jumanji, he was great in Ramapage even though the script was poor and in his latest movie, Skyscraper, he excels himself and let me tell you why.
The Rock's niche is clearly as an action movie actor, and that's exactly what he is in Skyscraper. He and his family move into a building that had recently opened in Hong Kong. Interestingly, in this movie The Rocks wife is played by Neve Campbell, who I haven't seen in a movie since the excellent but terrifying Scream movie series. But the main star in this movie is The Rock.
The building they are living in is the tallest building in the world, it literally reaches up to the clouds. Unfortunately a gang of criminals starts a fire in it. Cue scenes of The Rocks family trying to escape whilst the awesome music in this movie grabs our attention.
This isn't a movie for amazing storylines, but you don't watch a movie like this for that, and all credit to the director for realising that and concentrating on the action.
Thats what makes this movie stand out from all the others, the quality and also the terrifying nature of the action.
One thing I've always had is if I'm high up a very very tall building I can't look down. This movie plays to those fears spectacularly. There is one scene when the rock is hanging off a ledge outside and the camera (which is great directing) films The Rock from above which is great at making you feel nervous with the vast drop to the city below. In another scene he jumps from a crane into a building I mean the stunts he does throughout this movie are incredible! They will leave you breathless, and if you are like me a bit nauseated!
One other thing I forgot to mention is The Rock plays a guy with one leg yet still manages to fight the bad guys and do the stunts. One thing I've been trying to find out is where on earth they hide his leg in the shots because it is so realistic. Just amazing!
This movie is brilliant. The day after England lost a big game this really takes your mind off it! Non stop action, excitement and more. The Rock makes this movie, the stunts and the action are simply outstanding. Brilliant film, 5 stars awarded, very well done Skyscraper cast and crew. Awesome!.
