The Equalizer 2/The Spy Who Dumped Me (Double Review)
So, today I saw two good but not amazing films in a row, namely The Equalizer 2 and The Spy Who Dumped me and here's my review of both of them.
Let's start with The Equalizer 2. I loved the first Equalizer movie. I think Denzel Washington is an absolutely outstanding actor. He makes average scripts into quality movies, everything he touches turns to gold.
That's why I was so looking forward to the sequel to a pure five star movie, the original Equalizer. It starts off great, just like in the original movie, Denzel starts his stop watch and quickly works out how to kill the bad guys on a train in Turkey. So far so good, you think to yourself ' Wow, this is going to be another excellent Denzel action movie.' But, sadly this isn't the case.
Why isn't it the case? Well, the sound is great, in the build up to the action scenes you have dramatic music that gets the pulse racing, but, this happens very infrequently. Why? Well, and I don't often say this, but action movies are movies where you don't want too much of a storyline, you don't want it too drawn out. You want a bit of a storyline but really you want action, stunts, fight scenes and excitement. Just like the recent Mission Impossible movie.
Unfortunately in this movie, the action is very limited. It's very drawn out and there's way to much talking. This movie needed way more action scenes and way less boring talking scenes. Especially as it's the sequel to such an outstanding movie.
Don't get me wrong, Denzel does save this movie with his talented acting skills, but I reckon the reason there are less action scenes could be due to his age too.
In short, I am sad that I can only give this movie 3.5 stars and that's purely because it is missing so much action that you would expect in a movie like this. Worth a see for Denzel fans but sadly not the best. 3.5 stars awarded.
Now, onto The Spy Who Dumped Me. The title is an obvious mickey take on Bond and to be honest I was really looking forward to this movie. I think Mila Kunis is amazing. She is brilliant as Meg in family guy, and we now know why her voice is in less episodes these days, because she is filming so many movies. She is also incredibly attractive.
On top of that you have the hilarious Kate McKinnon who always make people laugh and you have a great comedy duo.
But, the main reason I wanted to see this movie was because the awesome Gillian Anderson was in it. Anyone that knows me knows i'm a massive X Files fan and my dream is to meet Gillian like i've already met David Duchovny. So, I was really gutted that she is only in a few scenes in this movie. A complete waste of such a talented actress.
This movie has a very exciting car chase scebe and I love the fact that it is filmed all over Europe and there are very funny scenes. However, it isn't close to being Bond or even a funny comedy version of Bond. The jokes on average aren't great excluding one scene which I will not describe on here as kids could be reading this!
It's an ok comedy, worth a watch, nothing amazing and again a 3.5 star movie.
So, two above average but not amazing films both 3.5 star movies but worth a watch to pass the time if you have an Unlimited card like me. Good way to spend the afternoon but the movies could have been better. Although they could have been worse too haha! Enjoy! :-)
