Mile 22/A Simple Favor (Double Review)
***Warning, contains spoilers***
Today was a weird day. I went to the cinema to see one film, but ended up seeing two as the first one was so bad. I only saw the second one to make up for the utter rubbish of the first one. I was also massively shocked by the first film as I have seen virtually every Mark Whalberg movie ever made and he is a brilliant actor, he has even made average films look good and he has worked with this director before in great movies so it has to be great, right? Wrong.
How wrong could I be? This movie had everything going for it. Two of my favourite actors in Mark Whalberg and John Malkovich, a good director and trailers that looked amazing. Concern came when the critic and the public reviews were dreadful but I thought, they've been wrong before. Well, they weren't this time.
What a waste of talent, what ridiculous hand held style camerawork that just makes you feel dizzy and makes the story even harder to follow. What a dissaponting ending, what dissaponting acting from Malkovich and even sadly, Whalberg who just look like they're phoning their roles in.
The story is that Whalberg works for an undercover elite team but that's about it. The scenes jump so bizzarely it's unreal. One minute they are talking to their prisoner, the next moment they are showing Whalberg being interviewed about what happened but at a camera angle that looks like someone snuck in and filmed it discreetly on their phone. I'm guessing this may have been the directors intention but it's just truly, truly awful.
It's like the director and Whalberg had a conversation and said 'Just say a few tough guy, anti government lines and look tough, that'll sell tickets'. It's such a shame because this could have been a great action movie but instead it's hard to follow, shaky camera style tosh. I'm gutted to say this as it's a Mark Whalberg movie but it's truly an absolute mess. It even feels rushed. Like they wanted to release it so didn't edit it properly.
I have nothing good to say about this movie. The acting is dreadful, the story is impossibly hard to follow, the camerawork is nauseating it's just an absolute mess. No stars awarded, don't bother!
So, onto the next movie, bear in mind this isn't a movie I was going to see. They can't even spell favour correctly lol. I saw the trailer and I thought 'chick flick, not for me'. But then I saw the rubbish that was Mile 22 and I couldn't leave the cinema having only seen that pile of crap.
Boy, am I glad I saw this movie. It is not what you think, not at all. The acting by the gorgeous Anna Kendrick, who I have always rated, is incredible. It takes the movie to a new level. I mean, if I was still doing a top ten of movies of all time this would be in it, easily.
It's funny how a movie you had no intention of seeing can massively surprise you. The movie starts off like a romantic comedy, Anna Kendrick plays a single mum, trying to make ends meet. She has a cookery mum vlog where she teaches other mums how to cook amazing recipes.
She makes friends with another mum because their two children want a playdate as it's called in America. So far, so normal.
But, then it gets twisted and this is the reason I gave my spoiler alert at the start of the review. The mum's get drunk and reveal darker sides about themselves, e.g Anna Kendricks character has slept with her half brother, and the other mum has had a threesome with another woman!
Then the other mum asks Anna's character to pick her child up from school, just a 'simple favour' she says... But, then she goes missing and eventually turns up dead. Or does she? I won't spoil that bit for you.
Is it the husband, who mysteriously took out a four million dollar life insurance policy for her just weeks before her death? Did she kill herself?
Honestly, there are so many twists, turns, double crossings, sex and betrayal in this movie it will make your head spin. The closest movie I can compare it too is The Girl On The Train as it is a very similar story to that movie.
It is simply brilliant and the just under 2 hours run time flies by. Twists, turns, betrayal, sex, it really is a must see movie. Honestly, go and watch this film. It definitely is not a chick flick, it's a brilliant, brilliant tale. Absolute must see, one of the movies of the year. Five stars easily awarded. Thank you A Simple Favor for restoring my faith in movies after the rubbish I watched earlier!
