The Predator
***Warning, contains spoilers***
I have always been a big fan of The Predator series of movies. I loved the original Predator movie featuring good old Arnie, it was terrifying and exciting. I also loved Aliens Vs Predator as it involved two of my favourite movie franchises in one film series. So, you can imagine my excitement going to see the new movie in the series, The Predator.
I was chastened by the fact that the critics have slated this movie, as have a significant portion of the viewing public but I had to see it. It is one of my favourite movie franchises, I couldn't miss it.
So, what did I think of it? Well, it is nowhere near as bad as the critics and some members of the public have said. It's exciting in parts, especially the last 45 minutes. I'm sure there will be a sequel by the way, but I won't spoil it anymore than that. Watch the ending and you will see what I mean. The Predator is big, powerful and hard to defeat, and the fight scenes are awesome. The director did a good job with those.
But, it isn't amazing and due to the following reason it just misses out on being the four star movie it could have been. For a significant part of the movie it becomes a family film. Honestly, this movie could have easily been a 12A not a 15 if a bit of the swearing was taken out.
A big part of the story revolves around a boy who opens the courier package of a Predator helmet and arm piece his dad sent to his house for safe keeping. The whole middle part of the movie is very E.T. The boy plays with the helmet, he goes trick or treating with it on, etc etc. On other movies and t.v. shows, e.g Stranger Things, that would be perfect and fit right in. Little kid playing with grown up stuff, cool.
But, this is a Predator movie. It's supposed to be potentially an 18 rated movie or a very, very high 15. It's supposed to be scary like the Alien movies, yet there are many scenes of comedy in it which just don't belong in this type of movie.
The movie, fortunately, redeems itself in the last 45 minutes or so, that bit is full of action, tension and excitement where The Predator attacks them all and they try and fight back. Awesome and really that saved the movie it really did. But don't compare this movie to the original Predator movie, it wouldn't be a fair comparison. Watch this as a stand alone movie and see what you think from there.
In conclusion, this is a good but not great action movie, with a last 45 minutes of action that definitely saves the film. When you make the next one, don't make it so 'family friendly' please. This is The Predator not E.T. A good movie, nearly four stars but not quite. Recommended for fans of either The Predator or Alien movie series, 3.75 stars awarded.
