Upgrade
***Warning, contains spoilers***
There is a big lesson to this movie, and that is that a film doesn't have to be a blockbuster, in fact it doesn't have to make a lot of money, in fact it doesn't have to be released in many places to be an outstanding movie.
Upgrade is a brilliant example of this. I wanted to see this movie because I love Sci-fi, I love action movies, and I think the main actor, Logan Marshall-green, is a very talented actor, as he proved in Spider Man: Homecoming amongst other films.
Also this movie was by people that were involved in such outstanding movies as Get Out. So, I had to see it. However, how did I find out about this film? Trailers? No, there weren't any I saw. Poster in the cinema, no it wasn't promoted. In fact the only way I found out about this movie was by noticing it on the listings for my local cinema and Googling it to find out more. Even my local cinema clearly doesn't think it will be that popular as there is only one showing a day!
The cinemas are missing a trick, the movie going audience is missing a trick. The critics aren't as they love it, as do the reviewers on rotten tomatoes but it is a shame, a real shame that this movie wasn't better promoted because if it was everyone would see it. In fact everyone who reads this review should see it. It's simply outstanding. Think Ex-Machina but better. Yep, it is that good but that movie got all the promotion this didn't.
The main reason it's so good is the main actor and the way the director shows the way technology and A.I. is advancing scarily fast. It's also gripping because believe you me, this movie is terrifyingly close to reality. Self driving cars? Round the corner? More sophisticated A.I's? 20 years tops. It's set in a time that is very, very near.
It's a world where people have upgrades, e.g they have things implanted in their bodies to make them better, guns for example. On top off that it's a world where nearly everyone has a self driving car which takes them where they want to go. In our world self driving cars are already being tested.
It's also a world where you walk into your house and tell your A.I to turn the lights on or start dinner. You can do most of that now, that's how close this is.
All except the lead actor who is resistant to change. He drives an analog car without any extras, he doesn't have any upgrades etc. So, he's on his way home in his wife's self driving car when it's hijacked by hackers who get it to drive to a destination where his wife is murdered and he is left paralysed. Awful yep.
He is offered the chance to have a microchip implanted in his spine that will enable him to walk again and he accepts this offer, the problem is that the microchip is also an A.I. called stem which controls his body into a killing machine and talks to him and talks him into going after the people that killed his wife. It's gripping, it's disturbing because this reality is not far away and it's an absorbing epic movie with so many twists and turns.
The biggest twist, in fact double twist is the ending, it will blow your mind. In the actors case quite literally but I won't spoil it exactly for you.
Everything about this movie is brilliant, the action, the sound, the technology, just epic. If I was still doing an official top ten movies of all time this would probably be in it.
However, due to it's lack of screenings and promotion hardly anyone will see it, and due to the topic of the movie and it's thought provoking look at our future, that is the saddest thing of all.
Absolute must see, incredible movie. 5 stars easily awarded. Wow.
