Venom/Johnny English Strikes Again (Double Review)
***Warning, contains spoilers***
I will start off by saying I love Marvel movies. Well I love all superhero movies but Marvel has the edge over DC by miles. It's because of the directing, the acting, the star names, the scripts it just goes on and on.
So, it was with great excitement after seeing the trailer I turned up at the cinema for the latest Marvel movie, Venom. Now, I highly rate the main actor in this movie, Tom Hardy but I was concerned as the reviews for this movie, unusually, were really poor. However the trailer made it look epic and it's Marvel so I had to see it.
Sadly, the trailers showed the best bits. The problem when a new superhero enters the scene is the first movie is usually a 'how they became a superhero' movie. The first Ant Man movie is a perfect example but there are lots of others. When this happens you end up with about 50 minutes of the character just being an ordinary person, probably quite down leading an ordinary life. Trouble is, it's boring. I wish when a new superhero launches they would make the pre being a superhero bit as short as possible. However the good news is in the sequel that will surely follow based on the scene during the credits, we won't have all that and will be straight into superhero stuff.
So, that was the first issue. The next issue was Tom Hardys awful American accent. He is an excellent actor and that accent was just terrible and completely pointless. Why couldn't he have just been an English guy that moved to the USA. Jason Statham for example is in loads of American movies, but he still doesn't put on a dreadful fake accent.
The film itself is slow except towards the end and has a lot less action than a typical Marvel movie which is very dissaponting.
However, it isn't all bad. Firstly, there should be an awesome second movie staring a brilliant actor as an evil villan. I won't spoil it with who, but put it this way, you need to stay through the credits to find out. You actually need to stay till the very end of the credits as there is an animated post credit scene right at the end. Do not leave until all the credits are done.
The venom character is awesome, the deep voice, the CGI and the fact that he targets good and bad guys. He's sort of an anti hero that is awesome.
However, the second movie will be better I'm sure but the first movie was too slow and spent way too much time on him becoming a superhero. Also, we are in the middle of Thanos snap and where was the reference too that? Why didn't they disappear in the post credits sequence? Did Thanos snap not happen? Ridiculous. Unless it is supposed to be set in a different time but I'm not certain on that.
Not awful, but not great. I hope the sequel will be better, worth a watch for Marvel/superhero fans, 3.5 stars awarded.
Right, the latest Johnny English film. I love Rowan Atkinson as an actor, he is truly hilarious. It often seems that nearly everything he does is linked with one of his oldest characters, Mr Bean. Even as Johnny English, his mannerisms remind me of Mr Bean.
I love the Johnny English film series, I find them hysterically funny. They aren't the sort of movies where you have to think, you just sit back and laugh at the hilarious exploits of Rowan Atkinson who is a comedy genius.
This movie is exactly the same, I don't have much to say on it except it's a hilarious take on Bond if Bond wasn't suave and sophisticated and it's hysterically funny.
Normally a Johnny English film would get a solid 4 stars, but this entry in the series is better than that, for one reason, it has an absolutely hilarious virtual reality sequence. You literally can't stop laughing during that whole scene. I mean the laughter in the cinema during that scene echoed around the cinema. Brilliant. For that reason Rowan Atkinson has earned the movie an extra half star and I can't wait to see what happens if and when they bring another movie out in the series.
Hilarious and brilliant, a must see if you just want to laugh for an hour and a half, 4.5 stars awarded.
