Robin Hood
***Warning, contains spoilers***
I will start by saying I love the Robin Hood legend. I know it's been done to death by numerous movies and t.v shows, even Doctor Who had a Robin Hood episode, but I love the whole idea of the legend. Robbing from the rich and giving to the poor, it's a lovely thought, especially as we live in a world where the rich are getting richer where the rest of us are struggling. It might be a very old tale, but it's a sign of today's times, sadly.
The trailer looked good, however one thing did concern me looking at the trailer, and that was the modernity of this version of Robin Hood. Taron Egerton is a very good actor, and he is spectacular in the Kingsman movie series. Those films are just right for someone who is an ordinary bloke like you or me turned into a hero but using 'street' language. 'Alright mate' etc, that type of thing. Especially as those movies are set in today's world.
The problem is that in this version of Robin Hood he plays the same type or character as in Kingsman, speaking the same way. Problem is, Robin Hood is set hundreds of years ago! It just doesn't work. You can't change history and combine modern day language with old England. It works in Doctor Who because they are using a time machine so obviously their accent wouldn't change, but these characters are from that time so no, it doesn't sit right with me.
Also, I hate to say it but I have seen quite a few movies with Jamie Foxx in and, he isn't the greatest actor so that doesn't help. His way works in a movie such as Baby Driver, where you need a tough, mostly silent guy but I just don't think it works elsewhere.
I have to massively congratulate Ben Mendelsohn, who plays the Sheriff of Nottingham. His character is terrifyingly scary and every scene he is in is mesmerising which is why, unusually for a bad guy, it's a shame that he is doomed in this movie.
I also want to congratulate Eve Hewson, who plays Marion (yes they didn't even call her Maid Marion), she is incredibly attractive and her acting skills are epic. Egerton is a lucky guy working with her in this movie!
Now, don't get me wrong, this movie isn't truly awful, it's average. Rank average. There are lots of good things, some of the actors acting skills as stated above, the special effects, the action scenes are all awesome, as is the music that goes with them. Plus, when he's not speaking in a language completely alien to the time period the movie is set in, Egerton is, as usual, excellent in the action scenes. The stunts in this movie are epic!
There's not much more I can say really. If you have an Unlimited card like me so it doesn't cost you anything, go and see this movie. Otherwise, wait till it's on Netflix or Amazon or something. It was ok but no more than that. A very average 3 stars awarded and I hope the sequel, as believe me, with the ending there almost certainly will be a sequel, is better than this first attempt.
