Long shot/The Curse Of La Llorona (Double Review)
***Warning, may contain spoilers***
So, today I saw two movies that I wanted to see, but wasn't desperate to see, however I'm glad I did because they were both excellent films. Not top ten of all time, but both class five star movies, and here's why.
Let's start with Long Shot. This movie the critics have given decent reviews too, and they were right to do so, it is an hilariously funny romantic comedy from two actors you would never expect would work together.
The first actor is Seth Rogen. Now Seth is a bearded comedy genius. He has done many movies such as Bad Neighbours and the hilarious movie that got banned to start off with, and certainly lowered relations with North Korea, The Interview. So, really we can say virtually everything Seth touches turns to comedy gold.
The second actor is Charlize Theron. Now she isn't usually a comedy actress, she is normally in action movies, but she is incredibly attractive. My goodness, any red blooded guy would want to be her boyfriend. Wow. She isn't just attractive though, she is a great actress.
Another bonus for this movie is that Bob Odenkirk is in it, he is one of the most talented actors around, due to his epic performances in Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad. He only has a small part in this movie, if you can call playing the President of the United States a small part, but he does it well.
The storyline is that Seths character is a journalist down on his luck who has just left his last job and Theron is the Secretary of State. She hires Seth to write her speeches for her and they end up as a couple.
You may think that sounds like a very simplistic storyline but there is a lot more too the movie than that. You would never think that these two would end up together, they are in completely different worlds. The hijinks that happen to them are both exciting, sweet and hilarious.
The movie gives hope to me and all the other single guys out there in terms of the fact that it carries a serious message, no one is 'out of your league' it is just a psychological thing and I hope I can use the inspiration from this movie to give me confidence to find my perfect partner.
For anyone that loves comedy and romance and action this movie is simply perfect. The two hour running time flies by. Must see movie, well done all, five stars easily awarded. :)
Right, now onto The Curse Of La Llorona. From now on I'll just call it Llorona for ease of writing!
My friend Dom and I had a conversation fairly recently about jump scares. If I remember rightly, and Dom I apologise if I got this wrong, he said that jump scares are a lazy way to do a horror movie. The critics agree with Dom too, the reviews for this movie are dire.
However, I completely disagree. I love jump scares. What can be scarier than someone sneaking up behind you and saying 'boo!' When you don't expect it? Dom will probably tell you that jump scares are old hat and real horror is more psychological these days and has more of a storyline. He found Hereditary scary whereas I found it a pile of garbage. With that movie you are supposed to feel scared by what isn't there, and are supposed to get why the ending is scary. Not to me, to me a horror will always be scary because it makes you jump. That to me is a true horror movie. Either that or a Halloween type gore fest horror movie.
I love the Conjuring series of movies, Annabelle is truly terrifying and The Nun I would say is one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. All of these movies are influenced by the absolute legend or master of the horror movie, the genius that is James Wan.
During the trailers before Llorona I noticed there is a new Annabelle movie out soon, and I can't wait for that. The guy is a genius in my opinion.
So it was with excitement but also nerves that I watched the latest instalment in the series, Llorona. I wasn't dissapointed.
Whilst not truly terrifying like The Nun it is still a very scary five star horror movie. La Llorona is a woman who died many years ago by killing two children in revenge for her husbands adultery and now she roams the earth, looking for children to kill.
It really is disturbing and you never know when something terrifying is going to happen next. Anyone who loves horror movies will love this movie it's as simple as that.
Scary and brilliant, a must watch for all Conjuring movie series fans and horror movie fans in general. Five stars easily awarded. :)
