See You Yesterday
***Contains spoilers***
So, this morning I got an email from Netflix advising me they had just added a movie I might like and, as time travel stuff really interests me I thought I would give it a try.
I wasn't dissapointed except for the ending and I will come back to that later.
See You Yesterday is produced by the genius Spike Lee, a man who has been involved in many outstanding movies. On top of that the absolute legend Michael J. Fox has a cameo in this movie and (spoiler alert), he actually says the famous line 'Great Scott', an epic and very famous time travel movie line from the brilliant Back To The Future movie series.
I can't talk names for the rest of the actors as they aren't well known to me, but they do an amazing job and, based on this performance should hopefully soon become household names.
I never thought it was possible to combine a movie about time travel with a strong theme about stopping racism and prejudice yet See You Yesterday pulls it off.
It is all about two kids who are 'science geeks' at their school and build devices that allow them to travel a few days, or maybe a week back in time. The first part of the movie is very family friendly and sweet and you think ah, sweet movie for all the family. It really isn't. About a third of the way through the movie the film turns into something much, much darker and sadder.
It all changes when the lead actress brother in the movie gets shot and killed by the FBI in yet another distressing case of mistaken identity. This movie shows you that this needs to stop, people need to stop being needlessly killed and people need to stop pre judging people based on their skin colour. It really is a moving film.
The lead actress is of course devastated at the loss of her brother so comes up with the idea of her and her time travelling friend going back into the past to try to stop it happening.
Unfortunately the first time they go back they are delayed by two bullies so don't get there in time. The second time her friend is shot and killed instead which is just devastating, so she goes back a third time and her brother is killed again. He sacrifices himself so her friend can live, it's truly tragic.
It's such a powerful message this movie creates. Massive well done to the writers, the Director, the producer, the actors and anyone else involved in this movie. Racism must stop.
I have one thing though that unfortunately stops it being a 5 star movie, just. That is the ending. After her brother has been killed again and she has saved her friend she goes back again by herself, against the wishes of her friend to try to fix things once again. When she gets back she runs then the movie stops. I really didn't like this, this movie is so sad I felt it needed a happy ending, she needed to save her friend and her brother. The movie needed to be wrapped up into a conclusion and it just wasn't. What a shame really on an otherwise great movie.
Anyway, I strongly recommend this movie, and as it's available on Netflix most people should be able to watch it. Great movie, well done all, 4 and a half stars awarded. :)
