Triple Frontier

***Warning, contains spoilers***

I've always thought a lot of Ben Affleck as an actor. To me he was epic as Batman and I'm gutted he won't be continuing in that role. However, it's not just Batman, he has been in so many outstanding movies such as Gone Girl and many more. On top of that Oscar Isaac is an outstanding actor too so it was with great excitement that today I started to watch their straight to Netflix movie Triple Frontier.

Straight to Netflix used to be a by word for average at best, but there have been many decent straight to Netflix movies recently that you can't say that anymore. I do have a concern that with more and more movies going straight to Netflix, is it going to kill the cinema? I don't think it will and I hope it won't but it is something to bear in mind.

I also love heist movies, my all time favourite being the classic movie Oceans Eleven, but there have been many more. On top of that the reviews on rotten tomatoes are pretty good from the critics side but a lot lower from the publics side and I was interested to see why.

At the start of this movie I was almost certain this would be a 5 star outstanding heist type movie. I thought the critics can't be wrong and look at who's in it, I mean Ben Affleck? It has to be outstanding surely? Well I was wrong.

It's not all bad, the battle scene at the start of the movie is awesome and the actual heist itself is exciting and great to watch, but, that's where it stops.

What is one of the main things with a heist movie? You have the actual heist near the end of the film. You have the planning, the preparation, the trial run, some things going wrong and then you have the heist.

Not in this movie you don't. Isaacs character and in fact all the main characters are all ex army guys who the system has failed. Excluding Isaacs character the rest of them have all left the army and are in dead end jobs trying to make ends meet. Not great for people that fought for their country.

Whilst in the military Isaacs character finds out about a house where a drug baron keeps millions and millions of US Dollars. He gets his ex army mates together and they hatch a plan to rob the drug baron and give themselves the life they deserve after fighting for their country.

With hardly any preparation time, just under half way through the movie they pull off the heist and it goes almost without a hitch, however due to the weight of the money the helicopter taking them to safety crashes and what follows is a battle for survival.

This is where the movie goes pear shaped and I really blame the writers of the movie for this. This could have been a really exciting heist movie where they plan and trial run and it's all exciting and finally get away with the cash to give themselves the lives they deserve, but no.

Instead we have to sit through an hour of them dragging the money through the jungle only to end up losing most of it, well, almost all of it due to the terrain they have to cross and a few bad guys, and (spoiler alert), Ben Afflecks character gets killed off! Why would you kill off the biggest actor in the movie? The one that probably most people had watched the movie to see? Absolutely nuts.

The other thing is that once they have stolen the money and are in the jungle and going across the mountains it is actually quite boring in parts and the acting deteriorates. I do think the actors do their best with a poor second half of the movie script, but the contrast between the battle at the start and the heist compared to everything after is just ridiculous.

So, sadly I have to side with the members of the public that don't rate this movie, and it started off so well too. Even the heist although exciting is dissapointing. It's too easy, where are the combination locks, the alarm codes to deactivate etc etc, everything that should be in a heist movie just isn't there and it's such a shame.

This could have been a great movie, sadly instead it's less than average. Ben Affleck and co stars, surely you can do better than this and writers this is not how a heist movie works and you do not kill off the biggest actor in the movie with a fair chunk of the movie still to go.

Sadly below average movie, must do better, watch something else, two stars sadly only awarded.
