Child's Play
***May contain spoilers***
You don't get many 'slasher' horror movies these days. When I was a young adult you had movies such as Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer and many more. These days most horror movies tend to be 'psychological' horror and rely on jump scares rather than out and out gore.
Don't get me wrong, horror movies are a favourite genre of mine, and I do like the psychological type horror movies, but I am getting a bit fed up with them, it's a bit overkill there are so many of them yet there are so few slasher horror type movies these days and I don't know why that is? Any ideas please tell me as it is a movie type that is now sadly lacking.
The 'Chucky' series of movies have always been slasher type movies. There have been many Chucky movies, the original Child's Play movie, Seed of Chucky and Bride of Chucky spring to mind off the top of my head. We all know the story of this movie, Child's Play from the original, but, in case younger viewers don't I have posted a spoiler warning at the top of this review.
Basically, a child called Andy gets given a new doll called Buddi. The doll is faulty and turns into a psycho killer trying to kill everyone Andy knows in the messed up notion that if everyone else is gone Andy will be his best friend and just spend all his time playing with him and no one else. Also, although the generic brand name of the doll is Buddi the doll chooses the name Chucky for itself instead.
I can't talk much about the actors etc, as they aren't ones I've heard of, but they do a brilliant job in this movie. Put it this way, the run time of this movie is ninety minutes and it flies by. In fact, you are that engrossed in the movie that when it is over you think 'Wow that went quick!' Well, that's what I thought anyway. Fair play to the scriptwriters and the director and actors as they all do a great job.
There are many disturbing scenes in this movie, the grossest probably being when the doll kills the guy Andy's mum is dating and leaves a present of the sliced off face of him with a bow tied on it for Andy to find. Incredibly disturbing and there are many more scenes like it!
I think what is so hard to comprehend is how a simple kids toy can turn out to be so evil and really this movie is educational as well, as it carries a great message to parents not to get carried away with buying their kids the latest fad. Is it doing them any good? They should ask.
Also, it really is a disturbing lesson on Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) as well because the doll is linked to the A.I. in people's homes via the cloud and smart devices which means it can control them and use them for evil. This really resonated with me as I use A.I and you never think of how it could be, disturbingly and easily corrupted.
In short if you saw the original Child's Play this reboot does it justice but also is a brilliant stand alone slasher type horror movie even if you haven't seen any of the movies in the original Chucky series of movies. It's funny, it's disturbing, its gory, it's exciting, and the time goes so fast it feels like the movie is about half the length of actually is. In fact, my only minor complaint is I wish the movie was longer and if that's your only complaint with a movie it's done well!
Not much more I can say except if you like horror movies or even dark comedy type movies go and see this movie, you won't be dissapointed! Great movie, absolute must see for all horror movie fans. Might not make best movie of 2019 but it is very highly placed so far this year! Great movie, 5 stars easily awarded, well done all. :)
