Men In Black: International
***Warning, may contain spoilers***
'Here come the Men In Black, galaxy defenders...' Oh, hello loyal blog reader (and thank you for your loyalty), I was just thinking about one of my favourite songs, a song I hoped just might be in this movie, but I think that was an optimistic hope lol!
In case you didn't realise by the above paragraph, I love the Men In Black series of movies, the first three have been simply epic, in fact it really surprised me when my friend Dominic told me he hadn't seen the Men In Black movies, i couldn't believe it! I thought most people have seen them lol! What made them so good was really the incredible chemistry between Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, they made those movies what they were. Obviously the awesome special effects as they fight the alien scum helped as well but it was those two that did it.
Men In Black: International is the first of presumably a new series of MIB movies without the leading two. So, how did it fare?
Well, the actors in it sounded amazing. You have Chris Hemsworth, best known as Thor in the Marvel movies. As we all know, he is an outstanding actor. On top of that you have Tessa Thompson who is simply outstanding in the epic t.v series Westworld. Then to go even further you have the brilliant Liam Neeson, an actor I truly admire, and Emma Thompson, who is an outstanding actress. There are many more, too many to mention. What a cast.
So, it was with great excitement that I sat down in the cinema to watch the new MIB movie today. I did have a concern and that was that virtually all the critic reviews are dreadful. I needn't have worried.
Firstly, let me tell you what the new MIB movie isn't. It isn't as good as the Will Smith/Tommy Lee Jones movies. But, that's not a criticism. They were exceptional, they were all top class 5 star movies so any new addition in the series was always going to struggle to be better than such an epic series of movies.
This movie will never be a 5 star movie, because it virtually starts again, it introduces a whole lot of new characters into the MIB series, and that will take time to get used too. Its not like it's a new stand alone movie, it's not, it's part of a series and people will always compare it to what has gone before.
The other reason that it's not a 5 star movie is it takes too long to get going. This is an action movie, and once the action starts it's great. But you have to wait for that.
However, these are small criticisms from what is actually a pretty decent action movie. Try, if you can, not to compare it to what has gone before (I know it's hard), and don't go wanting to learn etc, just go in, switch off and enjoy, that's what I say.
The chemistry between the two leading actors is brilliant, yes it's not as good as Smith and Jones, but it's still pretty great. Hemsworth and Thompson worked together in Thor: Ragnarok, which clearly helped, but they do work well together.
So, what makes it a good movie, if not an outstanding one? Well the aliens are hilarious, all kookey in their own way and the little character Pawney is brilliant. Really makes me laugh.
The action, when it gets going is pretty awesome, really cool fight scenes, flying cars and incredible special effects. The special effects team in this movie deserve high praise indeed.
Watch out for one 'morning after' scene where Hemsworths character has slept with an alien but similar to human looking woman and he wakes up and pulls the tentacles off his body with an audible pop lol. In fact kudos to the sound/music department too for a great job.
In short, this is a 'cool' movie, it's got loads of cool gadgets, it's got cool action scenes and cool dialogue too, there are plenty of jokes in there etc that will make you laugh and smile.
If you are a fan of the MIB series of movies, or just like sci fi and special effects type movies, or even action comedy type movies, you will enjoy this film. Its standard action fare, but well worth a watch. Decent movie, a lot of fun, 4 stars awarded. :)
