Shaft
***Warning, may contain spoilers***
So, I never saw the original Shaft movie, but I certainly saw Samuel L Jacksons remake in 2000 and it was very good. Lots of humour, lots of action and he certainly had lots of female attention too! But it was a typical four star action movie.
I never on the other hand, expected a sequel to appear, I thought it was your typical one off movie, so you can imagine my surprise when I turned on Netflix yesterday and saw the new Shaft movie on there. I thought to myself 'wow, I have to watch this!'.
As regular readers of my blog will know, I have concerns with movies that go straight to Netflix however those concerns have been allayed recently with recent straight to Netflix movies but that concern is still there. You just think to yourself 'if the movie is good, why isn't in the cinema?'. But on the other hand for viewers it's great as it will save people a lot of money and they won't have to wait until the movie comes out on Netflix etc if they can't afford the cinema.
One huge positive about the latest Shaft movie is that Samuel L Jackson still is a main character. Jackson is a legend and is always a great actor in almost everything he is in and he certainly is the main selling point of this movie as the rest of the actors aren't that well known.
The storyline is that Jackson had a son back in the 1980s, who he is now estranged from. His son is working as a data analyst for the FBI when his friend is killed and framed to look like he drug overdosed himself when that wasn't what really happened. He is forced to seek out the assistance of his Dad, Shaft who is used to dealing with the criminal underworld of the world.
What follows is a surprisingly small amount of action for an action movie, with a lot of talking and not much happening, in fact there really isn't much of a story it's sadly quite boring, I was nodding off during parts of it. Don't get me wrong, when the action/fight scenes are happening it's really good, but where's the decent story to go with it to fill in the gaps between the action scenes? They are virtually non existent!
The other thing that concerns me about this movie is, considering it's 2019 it's treatment of women is very backward. It teaches us that women are only there for sex or as objects to ogle and that men are superior and virtually all women want 'real' men who can fight for them. On top of that there are mildly offensive jokes about sexuality which would have been fine decades ago, but definitely are not fine now. The whole thing is incredibly regressive and backward.
Don't get me wrong, Jackson does his best but he's having to work with a poor script and poor dialogue so it can't be easy. Also the action scenes are decent but there isn't many of them.
To be honest, if you've got Netflix so you can see this for free then fine watch it if you want, but don't go out of your way to watch it, there are probably better things you can do with your day, especially if you're a woman or gay as you may well feel offended.
In conclusion the new Shaft movie is incredibly boring and it's also mildly offensive too. Don't go out of your way to watch it, such a waste of a great actor in Samuel L Jackson, 2 stars sadly awarded.
