Spider-Man: Far From Home/Midsommar
***Warning, contains spoilers***
So, today I saw two outstanding movies, read onto find out why they were so good! Spoilers follow, you have been warned!
Regular readers of my movie blog will know I love Super Hero movies, especially Marvel movies. I especially couldn't wait for this movie as it directly follows on from the events of Avengers: Endgame which, is in my book, the second best movie ever made so it was very unlikely that anything following that was going to top that movie. However, this isn't about that movie, it's about the next one in the Marvel series of movies.
There was so much brilliant about this movie, and it really is a 5 star movie, however I want to start off with my one (and it is fairly big), negative.
The whole movie is fun, light hearted and easy to watch after all the events of Infinity War and Endgame, right until the mid credits scene. Spider Man has killed the bad guy, and got the girl and everything was happy, but then, just before he was killed the bad guy and his team leaked a video to the local paper, a heavily edited video that made Spider Man look like the bad guy, and even worse, revealed his identity to the world as Peter Parker.
Now, I complained after Marvel did a sad ending to Infinity War, and I thought maybe they had learned from that, but clearly not. When you've watched a great movie that's a lot of fun, light hearted and full of action, to have one scene that depresses you and changes everything isn't great to say the least! Stop doing it Marvel! Super Hero movies, especially Spider Man movies, are supposed to end on a happy note. Spider Man is just a kid for goodness sake. Very dissapointing. Plus, what happens now? Now the world knows he is Spider Man how can he continue as the super hero?!
However, that was the only negative on an otherwise epic movie. It stopped it getting near my all time top ten but it certainly didn't stop it being a stunning 5 star movie.
To my knowledge, almost every Marvel movie, and DC movie for that matter has been set in the USA, it is like the rest of the world doesn't exist. So, I am so pleased to see Marvel make a movie that is set in Europe. Brilliant!
On top of that the action scenes are simply incredible. How they filmed the climax in London I don't really know. The scenes on Tower Bridge looked so realistic you simply have no idea how they made them.
On top of that, finally Peter Parker got the girl that he's wanted for such a long time and I am so happy about this. Those two belong together and it was great to see.
Also, what a twist for Mysterio to have faked the disaster just because he wanted to become an Avenger! The guy playing him is an actor I really admire and he is outstanding in this movie. It really is a twist i never saw coming, and I doubt many will have. Incredible!
There are also some very funny jokes about the relationship between Americans and Europeans and so on! Just brilliant!
All in all this is a pure five star movie and an absolute must see for Super Hero movie fans. Also stay until the very end of the credits as there is an important scene involving Nick Fury that you need to see!
Epic movie, shame about the mid credits scene but I guess it will be interesting to see how Spider Man gets out of this predicament in the inevitable sequel! Well done all, five stars easily awarded.
Right, onto the second film I saw today, Midsommar. This movie couldn't be anymore different to the first movie I saw, and this movie is strictly adults only! It very much deserves it's 18 age rating!
I was really nervous seeing this movie, it was directed by the director of the absolute load of rubbish, Hereditary. That was a movie that was utterly stupid and bizzare and didn't make a lot of sense. It was so weird because it started off as a great horror movie, then turned into something very odd and ridiculous.
So, you can imagine I was nervous about seeing this movie. However, I need not have worried! This movie is as good as Hereditary is bad. It's disturbing and weird, yes, but it has a storyline, it makes sense. Also, for any red blooded males out there some of the scenes are interesting to say the least! The only way I can describe it is the horror version of the movie Eyes Wide Shut, and we all know how that movie went!
So, it all starts when the main female character in the movie has a terrible, horrendous event in her life. Her parents kill themselves by running a pipe from the car exhaust into their bedroom, horrendous I'm sure you will agree.
She is friends with a group of people which includes her boyfriend and some others, one of which is a Swedish chap who invites them all to his home town in Sweden to join in with their Midsommar festival, which only happens every ninety years.
What the rest of them don't know is he has set them up, he wants to get them there so they can be sacrificed as part of the 90 year ritual.
What follows is incredibly gruesome and disturbing, and not for the faint hearted.
In their culture when you reach the age of 72 you have to kill yourself by jumping off a high cliff, the rest of the group doesn't realise this is going to happen so, when it does it is incredibly horrific for them. To follow that up when one of the jumpers isn't quite dead they literally smash his head in with a mallet.
Then following that they are all given drinks that drug them and keep them docile and, one of them is that drugged he cheats on his girlfriend in sex scenes so vivid I haven't seen stuff like that since the movie Eyes Wide Shut!
At the end she is forced to choose whether to sacrifice her boyfriend or one of the residents of the commune where they all are. I will let you watch the movie to see who they choose.
In short, this is one of the most disturbing and grotesque horror movies I've ever seen, but also one of the most brilliant and I'm fairly sure Midsommar will make my top ten of 2019.
Brilliant movie, a must see for all horror movie fans, five stars easily awarded, well done all.
